Abstract

Whistleblowers play a crucial role in ensuring accountability and transparency within both the public and private sectors. In the context of white-collar crimes—non-violent offences committed by individuals in positions of trust and authority, often involving financial misconduct, fraud, or corruption, whistleblowers act as the first line of defence against unethical practices. Their disclosures frequently uncover complex fraudulent schemes or illegal activities, which otherwise might remain hidden for years. In India, however, despite the significant role whistleblowers play in curbing corruption and maintaining the integrity of corporate and governmental institutions, the protection of these individuals remains a contentious issue. This essay examines the legal protections for whistleblowers in India, the challenges they face, and the reforms necessary to ensure their safety and encourage greater transparency.
